Jochumhof

Description

Jochumhof is a botanical garden in the Limburg monastery village of Steyl, close to the River Meuse. It is sheltered behind old walls and therefore feels unexpectedly quiet and enclosed. With its cafe, it also functions as a calm stopping point within the village.

History

Sources connect the botanical garden with the monastery history of Steyl and with twentieth-century garden development, including around 1933. Steyl is known for its monasteries and mission houses, and the garden fits naturally into that green religious village setting.

Nature & Design

The collection includes unusual, old and exotic plants, shrubs and trees. Its sheltered position creates a microclimate for a varied planting palette. Paths, walls and sightlines give Jochumhof the character of a hidden garden rather than an open park.

Visitor Information

Jochumhof is open to the public on fixed days. Usual hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. Check current opening times before travelling.

Good to Know

A visit combines well with the monasteries, the Meuse riverbank and the historic centre of Steyl. The garden is compact enough for a short stop, but rich enough to reward slow looking.
