Description
Pinetum de Dennenhorst is a conifer woodland garden of about six hectares, hidden behind De Lunterse Boer. Mature conifers, heathland, winding paths and long sightlines give the collection the atmosphere of a natural forest park.
History
Henri Dinger and his wife Carey drew up the planting plan in 1933. On 29 March 1934, the first trees from an order of about 150 specimens were planted. Renovation of the overgrown garden began in 2004, and a friends' foundation was established in 2006 to support its management and preservation.
Collection & design
The collection contains large and unusual conifers from different parts of the temperate world. The trees were deliberately given space to develop their natural form. The collection has been inventoried, provided with up-to-date names and entered in a searchable register. Sheep and volunteers help keep the heath and sightlines open.
Visitor information
Visitors may walk freely on the paths from sunrise to sunset. Admission is free, although a voluntary contribution towards maintenance is appreciated. Dogs are not allowed because sheep graze in the garden. The pinetum may close temporarily during maintenance or events.
Fun fact
The first tree planted in 1934, in the presence of local dignitaries, was a blue Atlas cedar.
