Siertuin Gooilust

Description

The ornamental garden at Gooilust is a walled, quiet garden on the historic Gooilust estate in 's-Graveland. Behind the wall is not an ordinary park corner, but a carefully maintained collection of borders, paths and unusual plants. Natuurmonumenten describes it as a hidden treasure within the estate.

History

The garden was laid out in 1823. Gooilust belongs to the historic estates of 's-Graveland, a chain of country houses between Hilversum and the Vecht area. Former private owners were known for their interest in exotic trees, shrubs and plants.

Nature & Design

According to Natuurmonumenten, the garden contains more than 900 species of exotic trees, shrubs and plants. The enclosing walls, sheltered planting and estate layout give it a much more intimate character than the surrounding walking area.

Visitor Information

The garden has limited seasonal opening, usually from March until mid-November on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons from 13:00 to 16:30. Admission is free and a voluntary donation is welcome. Check current information during heat or special circumstances.

Good to Know

Because it is not open every day, a visit feels like discovering a small private world. It works well in combination with a walk across Gooilust and the other 's-Graveland estates.
