Description
Between Arnhem's Sonsbeek and Zypendaal parks are two adjoining nature gardens. The Butterfly Garden focuses on the butterfly life cycle; a small gate leads into the quieter, flower-rich Silent Garden.
History
The Butterfly Garden developed around the Santino hill as a natural breeding and feeding place. IVN Arnhem and KNNV Arnhem adopted the Silent Garden site in 2015 and renewed much of its planting.
Nature & layout
Nectar plants, caterpillar food plants, sheltered corners and fallen fruit provide food across the seasons. The Silent Garden is designed to offer nectar and pollen for a long period, while shrubs provide nesting sites and berries for birds.
Visitor information
Both gardens are freely accessible from Parkweg, opposite Brasserie De Boerderij. The Silent Garden can only be entered through the Butterfly Garden, where two benches invite quiet enjoyment of scents, colour, birds and insects.
Did you know?
A monitoring route used by the Arnhem butterfly group passes through both gardens. They are therefore a place for rest and inspiration as well as a fixed site for tracking changes in butterfly populations.
