Description
Museum Elburg's cloister garden lies within the compact fortified town, enclosed by buildings of the former Convent of Saint Agnes. Flowers, herbs, trees and benches create a quiet setting beside the medieval double chapel.
History
The convent for women was founded in the fifteenth century and is an important late-Gothic complex. Its surviving buildings and chapel give the garden its historic frame. The present layout recalls the enclosed outdoor space that belonged to a religious community.
Garden & nature
Volunteers care for flowers, herbs and trees as well as insect-friendly features such as a bee hotel. In summer the garden also hosts art displays. The combination of planting, brick architecture and religious heritage conveys the scale of the former convent.
Visitor information
The garden can be visited free of charge during the opening hours of Museum Elburg and the tourist office. Check current days and times before travelling.
Did you know?
The double chapel beside the garden allowed different groups in the convent complex to attend worship separately.
