Kruidentuin Rekerhout

Description

Within De Rekerhout city park lies a compact herb garden containing native plants and herbs. Themed beds, name labels and QR codes make it suitable for independent visits and lessons about historical plant uses.

History

The original garden was created between 1982 and 1985 while De Rekerhout was being developed. A major renovation followed in 2005, led by the municipality, Stadswerk072 and partners together with IVN and original designer Jaap ten Hoonte.

Nature & layout

The garden is divided into rooms, each with a theme linked to herbs and plant use. Many species have labels and digital information. A large insect hotel on the central square provides nesting space for solitary bees and other insects.

Visitor information

The herb garden is free and openly accessible near the children's farm and tea house. Parking is available at the start of Krielenzand. Dogs are not permitted inside the enclosed herb garden.

Did you know?

From March through October IVN can arrange guided tours, outdoor activities and practical lessons. The monthly nature walk through De Rekerhout also includes the herb garden.
