Description
The garden of the Dordrechts Museum is a green oasis among historic buildings in the city centre. Visitors walk beneath very old plane trees and beeches, past sculpture, lawns and the museum restaurant terrace.
History
The museum moved to this location in 1904. Three substantial plane trees date from the museum's earliest years here. Together with a chestnut avenue and mature beeches, they form a living record of more than a century of museum history.
Trees & art
Several trees are estimated to be between one and two hundred years old and are listed among South Holland's notable trees. Sculptures stand in the garden, and a poem by Dordrecht's first city poet, Jan Eijkelboom, can be found here. The space therefore works as a park, outdoor gallery and calm entrance to the museum.
