Description
H'ART Museum's large courtyard garden is hidden between the Amstel and Weesperstraat. Old trees, lawns, terraces and broad paths create a quiet green space in the city centre.
History
The museum building was originally the Diaconie Oude Vrouwen Huys. The garden once served partly as a bleaching field while residents gardened and kept chickens.
Nature & Design
Old chestnut trees dominate the space and have been joined by four wingnut trees. The historic ox gate creates a characteristic entrance from the Amstel side.
Visitor Information
Access varies with the museum programme. Summer concerts, film evenings and family activities are held here; check current times and possible ticket requirements before visiting.
Good to Know
It is regarded as one of the largest enclosed gardens in central Amsterdam. The contrast between the busy quays and this quiet green interior is immediately noticeable.
