Description
The Luther Museum courtyard is enclosed by the monumental Wittenberg building on Nieuwe Keizersgracht. This quiet garden links the historic rooms and recalls the complex's former care function.
History
Wittenberg was built in 1772 as the Evangelical Lutheran Diaconal Old Men's and Women's Home. It provided housing and care for poor, elderly and orphaned members of the Lutheran community.
Nature & Design
The sheltered layout lies between long façades and forms a green interior space in the former care complex. The garden can be seen from several parts of the building.
Visitor Information
The courtyard can be experienced during a visit to the Luther Museum. The museum normally opens Wednesday to Sunday; check current times, activities and admission before visiting.
Good to Know
The museum story includes not only its collection but also the building itself, with regents' rooms, church hall, corridors and courtyard garden.
