Description
The palace gardens of Paleis Het Loo are among the best-known formal gardens in the Netherlands. They lie behind the palace and show the taste, power and garden fashion of the House of Orange-Nassau.
History
The design goes back to William III and Mary II, who developed Het Loo into a princely residence at the end of the 17th century. The gardens were later reconstructed using historical examples.
Nature & Design
The gardens contain formal parterres, fountains, sculpture, symmetry, sightlines and seasonal planting. The combination of palace, water features and formal layout gives the site its character.
Visitor Information
Visitors enter the gardens through Paleis Het Loo. Current opening hours, tickets and seasonal closures are listed on the official website.
Good to Know
The garden is not a separate city park but an essential part of the palace visit: from the terraces it is clear how architecture and garden were designed together.
