Description
Heemtuin De Maten is an educational landscape garden in Matenpark. Trees, shrubs, water and flower-rich areas provide habitat for plants, birds and small mammals within a residential district.
History
Schoolchildren planted the first trees and shrubs on 20 March 1983. A joint project by the municipality of Apeldoorn and IVN began in 1984, with volunteers taking responsibility for daily maintenance.
Nature & layout
The garden developed into a varied area of woodland, open vegetation and water. Management takes breeding birds and other shy animals into account.
Visitor information
The garden is freely accessible during daylight from 1 April. It may close for a winter rest period, so current IVN information should be checked.
