Description

On the Heuven estate beside the Veluwezoom visitor centre lies the educational garden of IVN Oost-Veluwezoom. More than ten themed beds show how native plants, useful plants and small garden features can support biodiversity.

History

IVN members maintain the garden and use it for guided tours, plant knowledge and advice about wild flora. Its location by the historic De Heurne farmyard explains the vegetable and herb gardens; an old silo has been converted into a pond.

Nature & layout

Visitors encounter three herb gardens, an arable plot, verge plants, woodland edge, willow coppice, butterfly garden, pond, insect hotel, dead hedge and a breeding heap for grass snakes. Grass snakes are sometimes seen near the water on warm days.

Visitor information

The garden is free and open daily. Semi-paved paths can be used by wheelchairs, but grass paths may be uneven and the entrance gate is heavy. The volunteer group is usually present on Monday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Did you know?

The collection goes beyond decoration: separate beds feature dye plants, medicinal herbs, edible wild plants and green manures. Historical and modern plant uses are therefore presented alongside wildlife management.
