Description
Arboretum Assen is a large landscape arboretum on the northern edge of Assen. The site is freely accessible and presents trees and shrubs from different parts of the world in a natural setting, without the formal feel of a classic museum garden.
History
The initiative for the arboretum began in 1997 and it officially opened in 2005. It was designed as a public tree collection, with attention to regions of origin and natural growth forms.
Nature & Design
According to the organisation, hundreds of tree and plant species from America, Asia and Europe can be found here. The site is arranged by regions and includes avenues, small hills and water features, so it feels like walking through landscapes rather than past separate beds.
Visitor Information
The arboretum is free to visit all year round. Visitors can use entrances on the north and south sides, with parking options near Ten Oeverstraat and Pitteloseweg.
Good to Know
This is not an allotment site, but a public collection of trees and shrubs for walkers and plant lovers.
