Arboretum Geffen

Description

Arboretum Geffen is a freely accessible tree park on the edge of the village. This young arboretum combines a growing collection of woody plants with walking paths, lawns and nature education for children and adults.

History

Jan-Hein Stadhouders and Harry Peters developed their first plans for an arboretum in Geffen around 2000. The project became concrete in 2014, and the park officially opened on 31 December that year. Its first trees were planted on the site of a former landfill.

Collection & design

The foundation collects and maintains trees and shrubs, including specimens with a special story. Together with the fruit orchard and walnut avenue, the site held almost two hundred trees in 2023. Information labels, walking routes and a children's nature trail connect the collection with outdoor learning and discovery.

Visitor information

The arboretum is open daily from sunrise to sunset and admission is free. Visitors are asked to remain on the grass and walking paths. Dogs are welcome when kept on a lead. The entrance is on Weverstraat; walkers and cyclists can also approach via Kerkesteeg.

Fun fact

Some trees in the collection commemorate a birth, anniversary or other event. Trees that have to make way for developments elsewhere may also be given a new home in the arboretum.
