Description

De Tuin van Jan is hidden behind buildings in Amsterdam's De Baarsjes district. It includes a Paradise Garden, School Garden, Rain Garden and Quiet Garden for neighbourhood life and nature.

History

This courtyard was formerly a school playground. Residents and partner organisations transformed the paved space into a green garden for education, rainwater management and biodiversity.

Nature & Design

Ponds, flowering plants, shrubs and quiet corners provide food and shelter for insects, birds and small animals. Visitors stay on the paths and do not pick plants.

Visitor Information

Public access is limited to announced Sundays and occasional educational activities. Visitors are asked to speak softly; dogs, picnics, alcohol and open fire are not allowed.

Good to Know

The name Jan refers to Jan Maijenstraat and its square. The Dutch name Ssstiltetuin deliberately stretches the sound of silence to stress the garden's quiet character.
