Description
NEMO's roof is a public green city square high above the Oosterdok. Planting, seating steps, viewpoints and experiments connect nature with science and technology.
History
The roof square was renewed in 2025 to a design by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. It follows Piano's original idea of the sloping roof as an Italian piazza for the city.
Nature & Design
More than 75 flower and plant species form an artificial ecosystem at altitude. They support insects and urban birds and show how greenery contributes to a healthy city.
Visitor Information
The roof is free via stairs on the east side, while some areas can be reached by lift. Regular opening is daily until 17:30, with longer Thursday evenings in summer.
Good to Know
Sensors measure light, temperature, humidity and soil moisture. An interactive display shows visitors how plants and animals on the roof respond to changing conditions.
