Description
Heemeiland lies in the north-western part of Prinses Beatrixpark and presents landscapes characteristic of South Holland.
History
A native-plant garden existed when the park opened in 1959. Subsidence after construction of the A20 led to a new, drier garden in 1982; the old site became marsh woodland.
Nature & Design
Its 2.25 hectares include a herb garden on a mound, dyke, field, clay pit, woodland, willow coppice and a zone where open water changes into land.
Visitor Information
The island is free daily. New walking routes and a bridge allowed the old entrance gates to be removed in 2013.
Fun Facts
The site has been called Heemeiland Schiedam since 2021 and is being renewed from 2025 while retaining its native-landscape values.
