Description
The Japanese Garden on the Clingendael estate is one of the most special historic gardens in The Hague. Because it is fragile, the garden opens only for short periods each year.
History
The garden was created in the early 20th century by Marguerite M. Baroness van Brienen, who brought objects and plants from Japan. It is a rare Dutch example of Japanese garden influence.
Nature & Design
The garden has moss, water, bridges, lanterns, carefully placed planting and an enclosed atmosphere. Its vulnerable details strongly shape the experience.
Visitor Information
The municipality of The Hague publishes the annual opening periods and visitor rules. Admission is free, but restrictions apply to protect the garden.
Good to Know
The Japanese Garden is rare, well documented and genuinely hidden; many people know it mainly by name.
