Description
The Paleistuin is a green city garden behind Noordeinde Palace, between the palace, the Royal Stables and the Royal Archives. It is open to the public but tucked away in The Hague's Hofkwartier. Visitors can walk past flower lawns, ponds, old trees and outdoor art.
History
Frederik Hendrik had the garden laid out in the early seventeenth century for his mother, Louise de Coligny. It was then known as the Princess Garden. After 1813 the garden and Noordeinde Palace came into the hands of the Dutch state, and the name Paleistuin came into use. In the nineteenth century the garden was redesigned in the English landscape style.
Nature & Design
The garden contains lawns, water features, mature trees and a permanent labyrinth laid out in the grass since 2017.
Visitor Information
The Paleistuin is accessible from sunrise to sunset via the Prinsessewal. It may close when important guests are present at the palace.
Good to Know
The classical seven-path labyrinth is a contemplative walking path, not a maze.
