Kloostertuinen Sint Agatha

Description

The monastery gardens of Sint Agatha surround the oldest still-inhabited monastery in the Netherlands. They form a quiet green space near the River Meuse and are described by VisitBrabant as one of the best-preserved monastery gardens in the country.

History

The monastery originated in the fourteenth century and remained in use for centuries. In 2021 it marked 650 years of monastery history. The garden itself developed from the eighteenth century and reflects traditional monastery functions: utility, reflection, recreation and religious meaning.

Nature & Design

The grounds cover about 2.5 hectares. The layout shows the variety typical of monastery gardens: paths, tree groups, green rooms and areas with useful plants. Its position in the Maasheggen landscape adds an extra historical and ecological setting.

Visitor Information

According to VisitBrabant, the garden is freely accessible daily from sunrise to sunset. As it is still a special heritage site, quiet and respectful visiting is important. Check the monastery information for exhibitions or indoor areas.
