Description

Behind the gate on Catharinastraat lies Breda's historic Begijnhof. Its 29 houses surround two enclosed courtyards, with a geometrically arranged herb garden at the centre. It is a remarkably quiet green space in the heart of the city.

History

The Begijnhof has medieval origins. Beguines lived independently within a religious community and used herbs for care and medicinal purposes. The present garden keeps that practical tradition visible.

Collection

Around 300 different herbs grow in its formal beds. Labels and the orderly layout reveal the wide range of useful plants. Together with the houses, church and Begijnhof Museum, the garden forms a coherent historic ensemble.

Visitor information

The courtyard is generally open during the daytime according to the current gate hours, with free admission. It remains a residential and contemplative place, so visitors are expected to be quiet and considerate.

Did you know?

The herb garden refers to knowledge that was passed down within beguine communities, where plants were part of everyday care as well as religious life.
