Overtuin Bisdom van Vliet

Description

Directly opposite Museum Bisdom van Vliet lies a long historic garden of about 3.25 hectares. Garden, park and woodland form three successive zones with flower beds, a pond, bridges, mature trees and long views.

History

The Bisdom van Vliet family began developing the garden in 1745. Over time it changed from a formal geometric layout into a landscape park and acquired a gardenesque character in the late nineteenth century. Paulina Bisdom van Vliet, the last resident, stipulated that both house and garden should be preserved.

Design & nature

Near the street are flower beds, a pond, Baroque statues and a monumental gate. Beyond them come parkland with trees, shrubs and small bridges, followed by woodland. Restoration and maintenance are carried out by the foundation, a heritage gardener and volunteers.

Visitor information

The garden is open daily with free admission, is largely wheelchair accessible and welcomes dogs on a lead.
