Description

The Prinsentuin occupies part of Leeuwarden's former fortifications on the northern edge of the historic centre. Old trees, winding paths and lawns overlook the Noorderstadsgracht.

History

Stadtholder Willem Frederik of Nassau had a pleasure garden created here in the mid-seventeenth century. King William I presented it to Leeuwarden's residents in 1819. From 1821, Gerrit van der Wielen and landscape designer Lucas Pieters Roodbaard transformed it into a public walking park, making the Prinsentuin one of the Netherlands' early public urban parks.

Garden & nature

The landscape design follows the curved waterside and uses the relief of the old ramparts. Mature trees, lawns and water define the park, while the bandstand recalls its nineteenth-century role as a civic meeting place.

Visitor information

The garden is normally open daily and admission is free. Parts may close temporarily during events.

Did you know?

Its change from a private princely garden into a public park can still be read in the layout and in its place between the old city and the water.
