Description
Wijngaardtuin is a hidden public city garden in the centre of Haarlem. It lies between Morinnesteeg, Jansstraat and Smedestraat and offers a quiet green space within the busy historic city centre.
History
According to Eco Expeditie, the site began in the 15th century as a walled monastery garden. In 1888 Haarlem landscape architect Louis Paul Zocher designed a new city garden here in landscape style.
Nature & Design
Residents of Wijngaardstraat help maintain the garden and add features that enrich urban nature. The source mentions great tits, wild bees, hoverflies, wild plants and bats.
Visitor information
Eco Expeditie states that the garden is open from 08:00 to 17:00. It is a public garden, but its enclosed location gives it a quiet and hidden character.
Good to Know
From the right spot in the garden visitors can see the Grote or St. Bavokerk. The old summer oak and horse chestnuts are linked to Zocher's design.
