Description
Behind the Willet-Holthuysen House lies a rare formal canal garden in the French style. Symmetrical patterns, clipped hedges, gravel, statues and a central axis match the historic period rooms.
History
The house is named after Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen. On her death in 1895, Louisa left the house and collection to Amsterdam with instructions that it become a museum.
Nature & Design
The present garden was inspired by early eighteenth-century designs by Daniël Marot. Historic tulips referring to the couple's era flower in spring.
Visitor Information
The garden is part of the museum and requires a valid admission ticket. The historic building has many stairs and no lift and is therefore not wheelchair accessible.
Good to Know
It is one of the few formal canal gardens in central Amsterdam that regularly opens to the public. Its symmetry is seen most clearly from the garden room.
