Description
Two quiet canal gardens lie behind the pair of canal houses occupied by photography museum Huis Marseille. Planting, garden walls and a garden house connect the monumental interiors with the outdoors.
History
The house at Keizersgracht 401 was built around 1665 for merchant Isaac Fouquier. Its original sequence of front house, courtyard, back house and garden remains largely intact.
Nature & Design
The two gardens now form one green space behind the buildings. An eighteenth-century garden house was carefully reconstructed in 2003 using surviving traces and historic photographs.
Visitor Information
The garden is part of the museum visit and requires an admission ticket. The museum closes briefly several times a year while exhibitions change, so check its calendar before visiting.
Good to Know
Hot drinks from the museum can be enjoyed in the canal garden. The adjoining Garden Room also contains a historic ceiling painting by Jacob de Wit.
