Description
The Museum of the Canals garden is a quiet historic space behind Herengracht 386. A fountain, four statues, hedges and a small pavilion give the symmetrical garden a museum-like character.
History
The museum tells the history of Amsterdam's canal belt. Its renewed garden follows this story with a design referring to roughly four centuries of canal-garden development.
Nature & Design
Four sculptures representing the seasons stand around the central fountain. The fixed geometry of hedges and paths is softened by flowers and mature greenery.
Visitor Information
The garden is visited as part of the Museum of the Canals and requires a museum ticket. The museum opens daily, with a later start on Mondays.
Good to Know
In one compact space the garden shows how formal green rooms were created behind narrow canal façades. The pavilion at the far end strengthens the long central view.
