Description
Heemtuin De Dwarsgouw is a quiet nature area in Purmerend presenting the landscapes of Waterland in miniature. Woodland, meadow, water and reed beds bring the region's plants and animals close to the city.
History
The original 0.7-hectare garden was laid out in 1965 to compensate for green space lost when Wheermolen was built. An IVN group revived the neglected site in 1989; management transferred to IVN Waterland in 1990. In 1994 it expanded to two hectares.
Nature & layout
The site contains wet woodland, other woodland, a large pond, amphibian pools, meadow and flower-rich reed land. Volunteers cut reeds, clear ponds and ditches, pollard willows and record species.
Visitor information
The garden is free and always open to the public. Its entrance is on Trimpad. The gate closes automatically and paths are mainly grass; some sections can be difficult after rain.
Did you know?
The garden is literally a small-scale model of Waterland. Many characteristic wetland features are gathered within two hectares, although in the wider region they are spread across a much larger landscape.
