Description
On just 0.6 hectares, De Heimanshof presents a remarkably complete picture of Veluwe flora. The garden lies within De Paasheuvel grounds in Vierhouten and is divided into compact habitats, each with its own soil, moisture and plant community.
History
Created in 1935, it is one of the oldest native gardens in the Netherlands. Restoration plans followed a period of decline from the 1970s onward. A 1994 study titled 'Mirror of the Veluwe' provided the basis for redesign according to ecological groups.
Nature & layout
Beech and oak banks, conifer woodland, fern corner, heath mound, bluegrass meadow, flower meadow, clay pit, rye field, marsh and wall garden sit close together. A stream runs through a large island pond into a smaller pond.
Visitor information
The garden is free and openly accessible; visitors may need to lift and close the gate latch themselves. The red waymarked route uses wider paths suitable for pushchairs, while the green route follows narrow winding trails.
Did you know?
Each walking route takes roughly fifteen minutes at an easy pace. The compact layout allows dry heath, wet meadow, woodland and arable flora to be compared within a single short visit.
