Description
Heemtuin De Höfte lies on the slope of the Oldenzaal push moraine. Differences in elevation, soil and water have been used to present a rich mosaic of Twente habitats on a manageable site.
History
The native garden was laid out in 2005. It has since been managed in a wildlife-friendly way, with volunteers carrying out much of the work using traditional hand tools.
Nature & layout
A spring, pond, ditches and varied soil types create both dry and wet growing conditions. Plants and animals are given as much freedom as possible to establish naturally within these habitats.
Visitor information
Walkers enter free of charge on weekdays from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and at weekends from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Dogs and bicycles are not permitted.
Did you know?
The position on the moraine means that height differences are more than scenery: they determine where groundwater emerges and which vegetation can develop.
