Description
Immediately beside the centre of Geldermalsen lies a native landscape garden on the River Linge, between Koppelsedijk, the marina and a former clay pit. Its trees, shrubs and waterside habitats reflect the Betuwe river landscape.
History
In 1976 the municipality commissioned Heidemij to prepare a plan, and the garden was created in 1977 for education and recreation. Original elements included reed beds, willow coppice, water, a boardwalk and a cherry orchard.
Nature & layout
Surviving Betuwe species include cherry and apple trees, several willows, black poplar, Dutch elm, hawthorn, hazel and guelder rose. Its position on the Linge attracts ducks, grebes and occasionally a kingfisher.
Visitor information
The area is free and openly accessible. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Parking is available on Kostverlorenkade; after rain the unpaved paths may become muddy.
Did you know?
A walking link runs from the town centre through the garden, along the Linge and Genteldijk towards the railway station. The garden therefore also serves as a green route through Geldermalsen.
