Description
Heemtuin Krimpen is a native plant garden of about two hectares in Krimpen aan den IJssel. Zuid-Hollands Landschap describes it as a miniature Krimpenerwaard, with blue grassland, marsh-marigold hay meadow, an orchid field, alder carr woodland and a dike with pollarded willows.
History
The garden was created in 1975 as an ecological native plant park. Plants, shrubs and trees grow there under conditions similar to their natural habitats. In this way the garden shows the ecology of the Krimpenerwaard on a small scale.
Nature & Design
The wet alder carr evokes the peat marsh that once characterized the Krimpenerwaard. Reeds and bulrushes grow in the marsh strip, where toads, frogs and salamanders are present. The grasslands are mown so plants such as orchids, marsh violet and Spanish knapweed have a chance to develop.
Visitor Information
The garden is freely accessible to walkers and open daily from sunrise to sunset. There is a small car park at the end of the Heemlaan. Some semi-paved paths are suitable for wheelchairs or prams in dry weather; grass paths are not accessible. Dogs are allowed on a leash.
