Description
Heemtuin Sloterpark is a nature-rich garden beside the Sloterplas in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Rare and characteristic native plants and trees grow across roughly one and a half hectares.
History
The native-plant garden was founded in 1975. Since 2016, foundation volunteers have worked with the municipal green department on management and education.
Nature & Design
Changes in height and soils including marl, sand, nutrient-poor sand and peat create habitats for different plant communities. The protected bird island Het Ruige Riet lies beside the garden.
Visitor Information
The garden can be visited freely. Guided visits and excursions for individuals and schools are available by arrangement; current activities are listed online.
Good to Know
The garden presents a small-scale collection of Dutch natural habitats. Information panels and QR markers help visitors learn about its plants, animals and landscape.
