Description

On the edge of Loenen lies Harmanahof, a nature garden designed for a wide variety of small animals. The former butterfly garden developed into a compact ecosystem combining water, rough vegetation, shrubs and flower-rich areas.

History

The name recalls Harmana Kolkmeijer, who designed a butterfly garden here in the 1980s. After her death the site passed to Natuurmonumenten. In 2001 IVN Eerbeek was asked to redesign and manage it, and Harmanahof officially opened on 18 August 2005.

Nature & layout

Management now supports not only butterflies but also amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds and small mammals. Grants and local support made it possible to create a pond, paths and an information panel.

Visitor information

The garden is free and openly accessible throughout the year. Visitors can park near the church on Loener Schepersweg and follow the route for about 300 metres. Guided activities are regularly held in summer.

Did you know?

Although its origins lie in a butterfly garden, the site was deliberately given a much broader ecological purpose. Keeping its founder's name preserves that earlier chapter of the garden's story.
