Description
The Prinsentuin is a walled Renaissance garden in the historic centre of Groningen. Behind the Prinsenhof you find a rose garden, a herb garden and leafy berceaus: covered walks formed by trained trees and greenery. Because of its walls and its position behind historic buildings, the garden feels secluded while still being right in the city.
History
From 1594 the Prinsenhof became the residence of the stadtholders, the princes of Nassau. The Prinsentuin was laid out for them in 1626. Visit Groningen describes it as one of the purest examples of a Renaissance garden in the Netherlands.
Nature & Design
The garden combines formal clipped structures with roses, herbs and sheltered paths. The sundial gate on the Turfsingel is one of its best-known entrances.
Visitor Information
The Prinsentuin is open daily from 10:00 to 16:30. In good weather the tea room in the garden is open.
Good to Know
The annual poetry festival Dichters in de Prinsentuin is held here.
