Description

Behind the Andringahûs in Aldeboarn lies the butterfly garden of IVN De Lege Midden. It is a colourful village garden where flowering plants, small animals and quiet places for observing nature come together.

History

A regular volunteer group maintains the garden. Removing several trees brought more sunlight to the planting, an important condition for warmth-loving butterflies and nectar-rich flowers.

Nature & layout

Alongside butterfly plants, the garden has insect features including a bee hotel and a butterfly shelter. Solitary bees can create separate brood cells in the hotel's holes and provision them with pollen and nectar.

Visitor information

Visitors are welcome even when no IVN volunteers are present. During the growing season the group often works on Monday afternoons, weeding, pruning and carrying out other maintenance.

Did you know?

Not every moth flies only at night: the six-spot burnet is active by day. Snowdrops and winter aconites flower here early in the year, before the main butterfly season begins.
