Description

In woodland near Blokvenlaan, the former municipal nursery has become Vlindertuin Waalre. Since 2003 volunteers have built a varied landscape for insects and people, with biodiversity at its heart.

History

The project began with daytime butterflies as its main subject but developed into a broad nature garden. Volunteers maintain the site and count butterflies weekly during the season for the Dutch Butterfly Conservation organisation.

Nature & layout

Small examples of Brabant habitats represent woodland, grassland, heath, rough vegetation, scrub and water. A flower garden offers nectar and pollen plants, herbs and vegetables, while a pond, dry-stone features, bee hotel and sheltered corners add variety.

Visitor information

The gate is open from sunrise to sunset. From opposite Blokvenlaan 43, follow a woodland path for about 150 metres; dogs must be kept on a lead and there are no toilets in the garden.

Did you know?

About twenty information panels explain butterfly life and habitats from April to October. More than 2,300 species have been recorded in the garden, with moths making up a large part of the list.
