Description

Behind the Elisabeth Orphanage lies an enclosed urban garden divided into several garden rooms. A kitchen garden, fruit garden, flower garden, small maze and old walnut tree recall daily life in the former orphanage.

History

The building was completed in 1560 from the estate of Elisabeth van Culemborg. Around seven hundred orphans lived here over more than four centuries. The complex was largely self-sufficient and included a large kitchen garden and orchard alongside its work buildings.

Garden & use

The present garden makes that practical history visible. Fruit trees and vegetable beds refer to food production, while flowers, hedges and play elements divide the space. From the garden and café, visitors can clearly experience the relationship between monument, courtyard and greenery.

Visitor information

The garden is accessible during the opening hours of the Elisabeth Orphanage Museum. Current admission rates apply to a full museum visit, and the Dutch Museum Card is accepted.

The garden was not a luxury: produce from its kitchen garden and orchard helped feed generations of residents and staff.
